Ken Sartain, formerly a consultant with corporations and the Pentagon on listening and relationship building, sent the following document to Rod Earls. He has used this tool when interviewing churches. It may give you some ideas as you come up with the ten questions.

The following is a growing list of questions collected from team members that might be used for the listening sessions. As I receive them, they will appear here. Your questions are due by our next meeting, June 10, 2013.
From Rod Earls:
Rod Earls attempted to reach LAX Urban Assoc whose Powerpoint we reviewed for their Listening Session Questions. Rod sent an email on May 14 saying:
"Ted Knapp is out this week (LAX Urban assoc); I will obtain further info then. What he shared last month is they basically asked pastors these matters about the association: 1) what do you see? 2) what are the weaknesses? 3) what are the values of this? 4) if we redid the assoc, what would really help your church?"
From Ray Reed:
1. Tell how the association has helped you or your church in the past two years.
2. What has the association not done for you you wished that it had?
3. Tell what you think the association does well
4. Tell what you think the association does poorly (not so well).
5. What are the top three things the association should be doing to help churches.
From Fred Bueto:
1. If you could design a conference that would benefit the needs of your church, what would the topics be?
2. What is something we could do as an association of churches working together that we can not accomplish as individual churches?
3. Aside from Baptist Doctrine, what are some of the commonalities that we share that would be enhanced by cooperating together?
4. What role should a Director of Missions play in the association?
5. If you served/ attended a church in another association, what was your relationship like with that association?
6. I what area(s) of church work would you be will willing to share your expertise with other CVBA churches? i.e. outreach events, VBS, small group Bible study, music leadership, business administration, creating a budget, leadership development, running a sound system, etc. It could be almost anything.
7. Finish this statement. "I believe our Association would benefit from...."
8. How connected do you feel to other CVBA churches?
9. What was the last CVBA meeting you attended, and how did you feel about it?
10. What question were you hoping we would ask that we didn't?

1. What do you consider your top 3 strengths as a church (what you do best)? If the Central Valley Baptist Association (CVBA) could assist your church in enhancing and sharing with other churches in the areas wherein your church is strong, how could we go about doing that?
2. What do you consider your top 3 weaknesses as a church (where you are deficient)? If the CVBA could assist your church in addressing and assisting in the areas wherein your church is weak, how could we go about doing that?
3. Why do you think the CVBA exists? Do you believe it serves no real/relevant purpose?
4. What do you consider the top 3 strengths of the CVBA (what we do best)? If you could assist the CVBA in enhancing and sharing with its churches in the areas wherein the CVBA is strong, how could you go about doing that?
5. What do you consider the top 3 weaknesses of the CVBA (where we are deficient)? If you could assist the CVBA in addressing and assisting in the areas wherein the CVBA is weak, how could you go about doing that?
6. What do you believe the focus of the CVBA should be?
7. The purpose of the CVBA is to:
a. Multiply disciples through effective evangelism and discipleship,
b. Multiply congregations through effective church planting, and
c. Multiply and strengthen ministry participation through pastoral and lay development, encouragement, and support
On a scale of 1-5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) how would you rate the effectiveness of the CVBA in fulfilling this purpose? Why did you rate the CVBA at this level?
8. The objectives of the CVBA are:
a. Mission development - to assist the local churches in planting of new work, to promote mission education and social ministries,
b. Church growth - to help each church and its mission by developing program leadership and by utilizing all the resources and methods available,
c. Pastoral support - to provide various avenues of pastoral support, which will encourage and promote physical, emotional and spiritual health, and
d. Lay-leadership development - to work with Associational churches in providing resources and opportunities for lay-leadership development that will encourage and promote greater lay participation in helping accomplish the objectives of the Association.
On a scale of 1-5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) how would you rate the effectiveness of the CVBA in fulfilling these objectives? Why did you rate the CVBA at this level?
